In January 2019, Altman Vilandrie & Company conducted a survey of four major countries (U.S., U.K., China, and Japan) to determine consumer preferences and trends in gaming. The findings, some of which can be found here, show an industry quickly shifting toward Mobile gaming, which has made gaming more accessible and has changed the way the industry develops and monetizes games.

In October 2019, our Australia research partner Venture Insights released a report consisting of our global findings and results of their own survey of Australian gaming trends. Some key findings of the Australian market are below and the full report can be found here.

Australia gaming market jumps 25%

Venture Insights found that “the Australian gaming market now accounts for A$4bn (US$2.75bn) in revenues and grew by 25% in 2018.” The mobile gaming market now stands at A$1.2bn (US$826m), growing at 11% annually. These findings show that gaming in Australia is growing at a much faster rate than the global market but have experienced similar percentage increases in mobile gaming growth.

Rise of Australian mobile play mirrors global rates

Matching the results of the Altman Vilandrie & Company survey of major global markets, 66% Australian gamers now play video games on their phones. This trend has led to expanded time playing mobile games: nearly 75% of Australian gamers say they play more or the same amount as last year. More than one-third of gamers play for a half hour or more on their smartphones on a typical day.

In a typical day, about how much time do you spend playing games on your smartphone?

Interestingly, Australian gamers are less mobile with their mobile gaming: while 60 of global gamers play while traveling or commuting, 84% of Australian gamers chose home as the place they frequently play games on their smartphones.

Australian gamers look forward to 5G

The arrival of 5G will be met with interest by Australian gamers, according to Venture Insights’ research: two-thirds of Australian gamers said they are aware of 5G. In addition, 30% of Australian gamers say they will pay more for 5G and half would upgrade their smartphone and calling plan within a year of 5G’s launch.
